PURPOSE: A system for tracking the position of an MS(Mobile Station) using an area partition and a virtual area and a method therefor are provided to accurately track the position of the MS by adding a virtual area concept including a sector boundary area, a zone boundary area and a block boundary area to an area partition concept. CONSTITUTION: If an MS measures the strength of pilot signals received from a plurality of base stations and transmits the measured strength of the pilot signal to the corresponding base station, a signal strength deciding unit(110) quantizes the transmitted strength of the pilot signal. An MS position defining unit(120) partitions and defines a cell in which the MS is located into a plurality of sectors and sector boundary areas. The MS position defining unit(120) partitions and defines each sector into a plurality of zones and zone boundary areas, and partitions and defines each zone into a plurality of blocks and block boundary areas. An MS position estimating unit(130) compares the quantized strength of the pilot signal with a reference value, and estimates a sector or a sector boundary area in which the MS is located in the defined cell. The MS position estimating unit(130) estimates a zone or a zone boundary area in the estimated sector or sector boundary area, and estimates a block or a block boundary area in the estimated zone or zone boundary area.
