The plug (2) to cover the ends of a pipe at a wall, and especially a water pipe, has a plastics protective sleeve (1) which fits the outer shape of the plug. The sleeve has a number of nominal fracture grooves (5) at axial intervals, shaped in the outer surface (4) of the sleeve. An additional nominal fracture groove (6) is along the length of the sleeve, in the outer surface. A holding flange projects inwards at one end of the sleeve, and one end of the sleeve has tabs projecting outwards to prevent rotation.
