The modular edging element has a lower part (51,51') forming part of a continuous channel for reception of a pipe and/or cable and a cooperating lid (53,53') secured to the lower part via a snap-fitting or a hinge, forming part of a flat top surface. The lower part and the lid have a convex curvature at one end and a complementary concave curvature at the opposite end, so that adjacent edging elements are interlocked at a variable angle, for creating straight or curved borders. A light source, an electrical socket or a hose pipe connection can be provided within a modular edging element, with channel openings (61) in its opposite end faces (62). An independent claim for a lawn or flower bed edging system is also included.
