The piece of jewelry, e.g. ring, etc. has a body (2) with an aperture (4), containing esp. a precious or ornamental stone (5). A support (7) for the stone is formed in the aperture, to define the depth, to which the stone is inserted into the body, and to support the lower edge (5') of the stone at least partially. A holder element (10) extending over at least part of the periphery of the aperture is formed by hardening of the body material, which has been taken from an edge section (11) around the aperture. The holder element at least partially bears on an upper edge (5'') of the stone. The aperture contains an anti-turning device for the stone. The tool to carry out the fitting process has a tool body with inner chamber to hold the ring, etc., and a segmented friction surface at the front.
