Hair colorant contains developer and/or coupler substance(s) selected from: (a) 3- and 2-chloro-p-aminophenol; (b) 2-methyl-5-amino-, -5-hydroxyethylamino-, -5-hydroxypropylamino-, -5-(m)ethylamino-, -4-methoxy-5-amino- and -4-methoxy-5-hydroxyethylaminophenol and 2-methoxy-5-aminophenol; and (c) 2-(diethylaminomethyl)-and 2,6-di chloro-p-aminophenol and their water-soluble salts.
