A method of producing an activated platinum group metal (PGM, i.e. Pt, Pd, Os, Ir, Ru, Rh and Re) by preparing an aqueous solution containing ions of one or more PGMs, adjusting the pH to 6-8, treating the pH adjusted solution with a reducing agent selected from hydrogen, hydrazine, hydroxylamine, hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide, to precipitate the PGM as metal particles and then separating the metal particles. The solution may be subject to ultrasonic action during reduction of the PGM. Where the particulate PGM consists of more than one PGM it may be reacted with a gas (e.g CO, PF3, CO / H2 or PF3 / H2 and mixtures thereof) to form two volatile PGM complexes which may be separated from a residue. The volatile complexes are then heated to decompose the first one. Further heating then decomposes the second volatile complex.
|
