A contact element (1) has a contact body (2). A contact arrangement (3) is attached to the contact body (2). The contact arrangement (3) has a spring tongue (9). The spring tongue (9) has a free end with a locking face (29) for securing the contact element (1) in a contact housing (17). The locking face (29) is moveable between a locked position and an assembly position. The spring tongue (9) has first and second retention tongues (10, 7). The first retention tongue (10) extends laterally to a longitudinal direction of the spring tongue (9) and engages an opening (13) in the contact body (2) when the locking face (29) is in the locked position. The second retention tongue (7) extends perpendicular to the spring tongue (9) for engagement with the contact housing (17) when the locking face (29) is in the locked position.
