The circuit has an input (4) for a measured sound level signal, an input (5) for at least one sound level correlated signal, and an output for a set value signal representing the desired gain of the amplifier. A learning unit (3) detects the functional relation between signal levels at the inputs (4,5). A control unit (7) defines a level of the set-value signal using a level of the sound level correlated signal and the functional relation, and outputs it at the set value output. Independent claims are included for a sound reproduction system, and for a method of controlling the gain of an audio amplifier.
