The part (2) of the device (1) used to support an essentially vertical rod (6) is held between two adjustable arms (14, 15) of the device, leaving the clamping feet (3, 4) exposed. A bolt extends between the arms and through a passage in the support part. A clamping device with clamping feet is mounted on the support part and the space between the feet is adjustable so that they can be secured between the ends of a brick (5) oriented at right angles to the wall surface. An Independent claim is also included for a method for providing a reference on a wall, by securing a first reference device to a first brick, securing a second reference to a second brick at a distance from the first brick, mounting a first rod in the first device and a second rod in the second device and tying a wire (11) between the two essentially vertical rods.
