PURPOSE: A free machining austenitic stainless steel having superior hot workability is provided, which is manufactured by controlling the amount of delta-ferrite in austenitic stainless steel with no addition of alloying element such as B. CONSTITUTION: The free machining austenitic stainless steel comprises C 0.15 wt.% or less, Si 1.0 wt.% or less, Mn 1.0 to 3.5 wt.%, S 0.15 to 0.40 wt.%, Cr 16 to 19 wt.%, Ni 8 to 14 wt.%, Mo 2.5 wt.% or less, Cu 4 wt.% or less, N 0.08 wt.% or less, a balance of Fe and other unavoidable impurities, wherein the portion of delta-ferrite in the free machining austenitic stainless steel is less than 6 wt.%, Mn/S is higher than 6 and the oxygen portion in the free machining austenitic stainless steel is 0.007 to 0.11 wt.%.
