The device (1) includes a first part such as a pulley (3) with at least one groove (6) for receiving a rope connected to a sail, and another part such as a locking element (4) adapted to move between a withdrawn position where the pulley can freely rotate and an engagement position in which the pulley is locked. The groove in the pulley includes a bottom with a polygonal, e.g. hexagonal contour. The locking element is elastically biased into the engaged position and is released by operation of an unlocking mechanism (14).
