PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video projector with a wide dynamic range and a quick response even when a liquid crystal element is used. SOLUTION: In the video projector 1, a driver 10 extracts a luminance signal and hue signals of respective R, G and B hues from a color video signal for each of pixels. A DMD 30 modulates luminance of light emitted from a light source 20 on the basis of the luminance signal. The light with modulated luminance is distributed with a distributor 40 and subjected to hue modulation for each of the R, G and B hues with liquid crystal panels 50-52 on the basis of the hue signals. The light subjected to hue modulation is projected on a screen 90 through filters 60-62, a compositing unit 70, and a lens 80. In this way the video projector 1 makes the liquid crystal element carry out hue modulation and makes the DMD 30 modulate the luminance with a wide dynamic range and a quick response and as a result the video projector with the wide dynamic range and the quick response is constructed even when the low-cost liquid crystal element is used.
