PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a measuring instrument for vehicles which reduces the power dissipation of a light source, and the quantity of heat to be generated by a light source drive circuit as well. SOLUTION: By using a two-wavelength type white light emitting diode 8 being a light source for illuminating a display panel 10, and using a thin-film solid type ECD as an ECD 20 respectively, the wavelength of light emitted by the emitting diode 8 is made approximately equal to high-transmittance wavelength to be obtained when voltage is applied to the ECD 20. Consequently, visibility equal to a conventional combination meter 1 can be achieved by less power dissipation than the conventional one, when voltage is applied to the ECD 20 i.e. in a black face meter state. Accordingly, a combination meter 1 which reduces the power dissipation of the emitting diode 8 and the quantity of heat to be generated by a controller 30 as well can be realized.
