PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metallic magnesium raw material which makes the uniformity and the handling safety of a mixed flux compatible, and provide a flux cored wire for arc welding, which contains the metallic magnesium raw material. SOLUTION: The metallic magnesium raw material, which is a raw material for a flux of the flux cored wire for arc welding, is produced as follows. The surface of a metallic Mg powder 1, 50 mass% or more of which has a particle diameter of < 75μm and 5 mass% or less of which has a particle diameter of≥150μm, is coated with a silicon oxide powder 2, 50 mass% or more of which has a particle diameter of < 10μm and 5 mass% or less of which has a particle diameter of≥75μm. The coating amount is, in terms of SiO<SB>2</SB>, 1-15 mass% of the whole mass of the metallic magnesium raw material. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
