PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a superhard, tough nanocrystal austenitic steel bulk material which has excellent corrosion resistance, and to provide a production method therefor. SOLUTION: The austenitic steel bulk material consists of an aggregate of austenitic nanocrystal grains comprising 0.1 to 2.0 mass% solid solution type nitrogen. As crystal grain growth suppressing substances, the oxide, nitride, carbide or the like of metals or metalloids are present between the nanocrystal grains and/or at the inside of each grain. Each fine powder of austenitic steel forming components of iron and, chromium, nickel, manganese, carbon or the like is mixed with a substance to form into a nitrogen source, and mechanical alloying (MA) is performed, so that high nitrogen concentration nanocrystal austenitic steel powder is produced. The austenitic steel powder is thereafter subjected to caking treatment by discharge plasma sintering, rolling or the like to obtain the austenitic steel bulk material. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
