The piston ring (25) has a mantle surface (27) which encloses the peripheral surface of the flat piston, provided with support segments having retaining surfaces gripping the top and bottom surfaces of the piston and a joint (37) allowing radial elastic deformation of the piston ring. The joint has a tongue (39) at one end of the mantle surface which fits into a slot (41) at the other end of the mantle surface and at least one sealing surface extending in the peripheral direction of the piston ring.
