<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a proton conductor which is excellent in heat-resistance and has high proton conductivity even at 80 °C or lower. <P>SOLUTION: The proton conductor contains a SO<SB>4</SB>group and/or an OH group in a crystal structure and includes a basic sulfate compound expressed in chemical formula Mnxn(SO<SB>4</SB>)y(OH)z (wherein, Mn is at least one metal element, n is an integer, Σxn≥1, y≥1, z≥1).
