PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera capable of fast photographing while suppressing the generation of smears. SOLUTION: When a shutter release button 44 is fully pressed, a CPU 26 enters a photographing operation. If a high-luminance component which possibly induces a smear is present in a subject field, the CPU 26 controls the exposure period of an image sensor 12 with a mechanical shutter 16. When the high-luminance subject is not present in the subject field, the CPU 26 controls the exposure period by an electronic shutter function of the image sensor 12.
