PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video camera microminiaturized small as an 8mm video cassette but capable of recording and reproducing, and a video camera system composed of the video camera and an external recording apparatus and capable of recording video data for a long time. SOLUTION: Video data shot by a video camera 20 are compressed by a compression/expannsion circuit 5, the compressed video data are recorded in an incorporated semiconductor memory 6 or a disk-like memory 13 fixed within the video camera 20, and the recorded video data are transferred to an external recording apparatus 23. Besides, the external recording apparatus 23 records the transferred video data in a data storage while compressing the data. In the case of reproducing, the video camera 20 inputs the compressed video data read out of the external recording apparatus 23, expands and converts the data into a television signal. Thus, the video camera with a recording and reproducing function which is microminiaturized and capable of long-time video data recording and the video camera system using the same are realized.
