PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simplified thread cassette and a sewing machine wherein the thread cassette can be set. SOLUTION: The thread cassette is equipped with a thread holding member 24 comprising a tension thread guide tray 94, a thread guide plate 96 and a compression spring whereby a thread before leading to a thread cutting edge 26 from a thread supply source is held between them. The positions in the longitudinal direction of the thread guide plate 96 and the thread cutting edge 26 are fixed by one stop ring 102. This stop ring 102 can be fitted removably to the inner ring part 82a of a projecting part 82, and when the stop ring 102 is removed, the thread cutting edge 26 can be removed from the rear side. The compression spring is disposed oppositely to the cutting edge 26 in respect to the thread guide plate 96 and the cutting edge 26, and even when the stop ring 102 is removed, the spring does not come off from the thread cassette.
