PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low loss optical multiplexer/demultiplexer circuit independent of ultra-miniaturization and a polarized face. SOLUTION: An optical multiplexer/demultiplexer circuit has an underclad 16 consisting of quartz laminated on a substrate 15; a core which is laminated on the underclad 16 and whose cross section is rectangular; and an input optical guide 11, output optical wave guides 13 and 14 and an MMI waveguide 12 containing overclads 17 laminated on the core. The core is made a semiconductor, and the overclad 17 is a substance having a refractive index equal to quartz. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
