The temperature monitoring device has a thermoelement (1) providing an output signal representing the monitored temperature, a resistance element (3) which can be switched across the thermoelement and a monitoring device (6), e.g. a microprocessor, controlling a switch element (4) for the resistance element and providing the internal resistance (2) of the thermoelement from the thermoelement output signal with and without the resistance element, for providing a validity check. The monitoring device can be preceded by an amplifier (5).
