PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stress testing machine capable of forming a device small to the utmost, and having a brake having an unchanged inter-rod distance during measurement. SOLUTION: This stress testing machine has the brake for stopping motion of a moving body by pressing the side of the moving body by brake shoes. This machine is characterized by having an upper rod 19 for fixing a sample on a prescribed position by vertical motion, the brake shoes 29, 30 for pressing the side of the upper rod 19, and two fixed reference position plates 17, 43 always in contact with upper and lower faces of the brake shoes 29, 30 in the vertical direction wherein the upper rod 19 is moved near the position of the upper rod 19.
