PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical filter for a display device wherein light transmission can be adjusted and distribution (unevenness) of the light transmission within the surface thereof is extremely narrow even if the surface area thereof is wide. SOLUTION: In the optical filter for the display device, electrochromic elements are formed at principal parts on a transparent substrate. The electrochromic element has at least a first electrode layer, an electrochromic layer, an ion conductive layer, and a second electrode layer, and the thickness of at least one layer of these constituent layers has a prescribed uneven distribution. The optical filter for the display device is provided with a means for detecting the illuminance and a means for automatically adjusting the light transmission according to the detected illuminance.
