[Also in Division D1] An expanded mat is made by depositing filaments on a rotating collector to form at least two filament portions comprising filaments deposited at different angles of lay to filaments deposited in another portion, applying a binder to the mat, removing the mat from the collector, stretching the mat in a direction transverse to the general direction and lay of the filaments, compressing one of the portions of the mat and retaining the compressed portion in compressed condition. The angle of lay of filaments in one portion of the mat can be 5 to 40% greatet than the angle of lay in another portion when the filaments are being collected. The angle of lay of the filaments, e.g. glass, can be varied by altering the velocity of traverse of the filaments along the rotating collector. The binder can be softened, e.g. with water, during stretching of the mat. The solvent can be dispersed on to the surface of the mat from a perforated elongated sack (23) extending transversely of the mat. The flow of solvent from the mat is controlled by the pressure of solvent in the mat, as by an inlet valve (25), (see Fig. 4, not shown). The mat can be oompressed endless belts. The binder can be hardened by heating whilst the mat is compressed. |
