<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a discharge performance of a catalyst layer for a fuel cell by increasing a reaction area. <P>SOLUTION: Of the polyelectrolyte fuel cell equipped with a hydrogen-ion-conductive polyelectrolyte membrane, a pair of electrodes pinching the membrane, an anode side conductive separator having a gas-flow channel for supplying the anode with fuel, and a cathode side conductive separator having a gas flow channel for supplying the cathode with oxidant gas, the anode and the cathode are composed of a catalyst layer in contact with the polyelectrolyte membrane and a gas diffusion layer supporting the catalyst layer, and the catalyst layer consists of secondary particles, which are composed of catalyst metal, carbon particles, and hydrogen-ion-conductive polyelectrolyte. A surface part of the secondary particles contains the catalyst metal in a higher density than an inner part. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
