In a process for producing combustible gas having a calorific value between 450 and 550 B. Th. U. from oil, tar and/or oil is or are introduced into superheated steam in a zone maintained at a temperature above 1000‹ C. and the mixture so formed is passed through hot checquerbrick in the high temperature zone to produce a gas consisting mainly of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, this gas and any excess steam being then passed into a zone maintained at a temperature between 800 and 900‹ C. and into which oil is simultaneously introduced to produce a gas of the desired calorific value. Tar is preferably recovered from the final gas produced and used in the process. In apparatus for carrying out the process cyclically there is provided two zones 1 and 2 independently heated and in a gas-making run used alternately to superheat steam and for gasmaking and a high temperature zone 7 lying between zones 1 and 2 and in series communication therewith and also divided internally by a partition 8 into two sections 9 and 10, each containing checquerbrick. In a gas-making run following a heating period in which the high temperature zone 7 has been heated to 1200‹ C. and the gas-making zone 2 to 815‹ C., steam is admitted at 18 to zone 1 and is superheated in passing through zone 1 and section 9 of zone 7 and tar, supplemented with oil if necessary, is added at 22 and 23 and the mixture of tar vapour and steam is reacted in section 10 to produce a gas consisting mainly of carbon monoxide and hydrogen and containing excess steam which pass together to gas-making zone 2. Make oil is added at 21 and the final gas is withdrawn at 19. Air may be added to the zone 7 together with the tar. In the succeeding heating period air is introduced at 19 and preheated in zone 2, oil and/or tar and any secondary air is or are introduced at 22 and 23 for reheating, zone 7 and oil and/or tar is or are introduced at 20 to reheat zone 1, gaseous combustion products are withdrawn at 18.
