A valve body 1 with inlet and outlet passages 2, 3 has a restricted orifice 42 between the passages diverging outwardly toward the outlet passage, and a resilient needle 56 movable to close the orifice on the inlet side is mounted for limited sliding movement within a plunger 58, an electromagnet 63 being arranged on energisation to move the plunger against the action of a spring 55 to withdraw the needle from the orifice after the plunger has moved the limited amount relative to the needle. An insert 4 in the outlet passage has an annular concave surface 35 with radial slots therein axially aligned with the orifice, and situated in the space between the surface and the orifice is a resilient cylindrical flow control member 40 having a convex surface facing the orifice, the flow control member being arranged to be compressively deformed against the annular surface on increase of fluid pressure across the member, thus limiting the flow through the valve.
