PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for detecting coking of a wall surface of a carbonization chamber in a coke oven, in which the apparatus can be miniaturized and to provide the detection method and the detection apparatus in which coking can definitely be discriminated from other injury. SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus for detecting coking of the wall surface of the carbonization chamber in the coke oven, whether coking occurs on the wall surface or not is determined by utilizing spectrum data in an infrared ray area of the oven wall brick surface in the carbonization chamber. The spectrum data in the infrared ray area are based on heat radiation emitted from oven wall brick surface. The spectrum data in the infrared area are measured values of thermal radiation brightness in two wavelengths of a wavelengthλ<SB>s</SB>not longer than 3μm and a wavelengthλ<SB>L</SB>not shorter than 6μm. In the detection method, spectral emissivityε<SB>S</SB>of wavelengthλ<SB>S</SB>is obtained based on measured values of thermal radiation brightness in these two wavelengths and whether coking on the wall surface occurs or not is determined based on the spectral emissivityε<SB>S</SB>.
