PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection image display apparatus which can improve a visually appreciative contrast feel by suppressing black floating (the phenomenon of grayish look of a screen that should be dark) in displaying a dark image (black). SOLUTION: The projection image display apparatus having a light source lamp and a light valve for modulating intensity of light is provided with an analog-to-digital conversion means for converting the luminance component of an inputted video signal to digital data, a calculation means for calculating an average luminance value in accordance with the digital data obtained by the analog-to-digital conversion means, and a control means for controlling the brightness of the light source lamp in accordance with the calculated average luminance value. The control means controls the brightness of the light source lamp so as to make the light source lamp light when the average luminance value is great and to make the light source lamp dark when the average luminance value is small.
