A method for recognition of surface relief-images on work-pieces by scanning with a laser beam as well as receiving and analyzing the echo-signals in a computer. The laser-beam is moved along a specified scanning line at a given scanning speed over the relief image, and the actual sequence of echo signals arising is fed to the computer and in the computer the sequence of echo-signals is stored (reference sequence) and arises in a typical manner during scanning of the relief image of a given reference workpiece along the given scanning line at a specified scanning speed. For analysis, the actual sequence is compared with the reference sequence of the echo-signals, and with agreement during the comparison, recognition is signaled.
