[Also in Division D1] A process for the preparation of highly shrinkable polyester filaments having uniform shrinkage at 130‹ to 220‹ C. which comprises drawing an undrawn fibre at a draw ratio of at least 3:1 at 40‹ to 70‹ C., shrinking the drawn filament by 10 to 50% at 65‹ to 130‹ C. and in excess of the first drawing temperature, preferably by at least 2‹ C., followed by a second drawing at 40‹ to 70‹ C. of 10 to 80% of the shrunken length and to not more than 1À2 Î the length after the first drawing. The filament may be heated to 30‹ to 70‹ C. prior to the treatment. The polyester comprises at least 85 mole per cent (and preferably at least 90 mole per cent) ethylene terephthalate units and up to 15 mole per cent of a dicarboxylic acid ester as for example ethylene isophthalate, ethylene adipate and/or up to 15 mole per cent of an alcohol component as for example methoxy polyethylene glycol, pentaerythritol or diethylene glycol. The polyester fibre or filament so obtained may be mix-spun with a non-shrinkable fibre or filament and thereafter woven into a textile fabric. Both yarn and fabric exhibit uniform high shrinkage, resulting in uniform and high bulk yarn and fabric with excellent hand and pilling resistance. |
