PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multistage A/D converter, having a pipeline structure whose circuit is simple and which occupies a small chip area at embodying with a semiconductor chip and is low in electric power consumption, and to provide an encoding method for the multistage A/D converter having the pipeline structure. SOLUTION: In the multistage A/D converter, having the pipeline structure constituted of a sample and holder to hold an analog signal by receiving and sampling it, a conversion portion to be constituted of a plurality of steps for receiving an output of the sample and holder and to generate digital data having the desired number of bits, and a correction circuit to lap-correct the least significant bit of the front stage and the most significant bit of the rear stage, when an off-set error is generated at a front stage converter for receiving a digital output signal from each stage of the converting portion, and to output a digital output data, an error correcting bit for correcting an error generated at a first stage, is placed in a second stage of the converter and the error correcting bit is not placed at a third stage and at higher stages.
