PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain higher non-seizure properties, wear resistance, friction properties and conformability in a copper based alloy for sliding using Bi instead of Pb for reducing loads on the environment. SOLUTION: The copper based alloy comprises, by mass, 15 to 25% Zn, 4.2 to 10% Bi grains, 2 to 7% Mn and 1 to 4% Si, and the balance Cu, and has a matrix with a single structure of anαphase. An eutectic structure of theαphase and an Mn-Si compound and Bi are dispersed into the matrix. Since the eutectic structure enough in toughness of the relatively softαphase and Mn-Si compound, and the Bi grains are dispersed into the matrix in this way, the copper based alloy for sliding more excellent in non-seizure properties, wear resistance, friction properties and conformability than those of a copper based alloy for sliding using Pb can be obtained.
