The protective cladding (1), for horizontal luggage compartments (12) in automobiles (10), lies over the lateral carrier (4) and the rear fender (5). It is linked to the luggage compartment floor (11) by a hinge (2) at the vertical opening (8) into the compartment. When not in use, the cladding swings back into the luggage compartment at an angle from 0[deg] to >=300[deg]. The cladding is of a flexible material e.g. a rubber mat, carpet, plastics, and the like.
