It is intended to provide a reagent composition for detecting .beta.-lactama se which contains 3-[2,4-dinitrostyryl]-7-(2-thienylacetamido)-3-cephem-4- carboxylic acid or 7-[2-(2-aminothiazol-4-yl)-2-(1-carboxy-1- methylethoxyimino)acetamido]-3-(2,4-dinitrostyryl)-3-cephem-4-carboxylic aci d as a substrate for detecting .beta.-lactamase together with at least one .beta.-lactamase inhibitor selected from among clavulanic acid, aztreonam, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and cloxacillin and by which .beta.-lactamas e can be quickly and easily identified at a high sensitivity.
