Goods to be transported comprise objects (90) on pallets, each object having a local data memory which stores data characterizing the object. The data are combined into virtual or logical pallets and stored in a central memory. The goods are moved to another location. During transport, a reading device reads data from one or more objects. By comparing the read data with those stored in the central memory, the individual virtual or logical pallets and/or objects are identified and allocated to the receiver or forwarder. Independent claims are included for an apparatus for reading data from data memories, and a method of using the system to transport kegs or drink crates on pallets.
