PURPOSE: A map decoder and a decoding method thereof are provided to simplify a structure and reduce a silicon area by reducing a memory size of a MAP(Maximum A Posteriori) decoder. CONSTITUTION: A map decoder includes an initial value generator(371), a first B generator(373), a first and a second memory(374,375), and a second B generator(377). The initial value generator(371) is used for generating an initial value for a backward metric value. The first B generator(373) is used for generating a backward metric value corresponding to a state of 2¬n/2 at a time k by using a max operator. The first and the second memories(374,375) are used for storing the backward metric value of 2¬n/2 and the index information for the max operator. The second B generator(377) is used for generating the backward metric value corresponding to the state of 2¬n/2 at the time k by using the backward metric value of 2¬n/2 and the index information for the max operator. |
