Class 75(4) A lantern, especially for street lighting, to be supported in a non-vertical position on a support column comprises a cast metal end structure supporting a light transmitting vessel and which provides a tubular structure extending upwards from the base of the lantern to form an opening inclined to the central plane of the lantern to receive the top end of the support column, the mouth of the opening being co-terminous with the base of the lantern, one or more tapped holes in the wall of the tubular structure within the lantern enclosure receiving screws to secure the lantern to the column. In the form shown, the lantern comprises a two-part body of which the upper part 2 is translucent and the lower part 3 transparent, secured at one end to a casting 19 having a tubular opening 20. A lamp 13 which may be a fluorescent lamp or a sodium lamp is supported by stirrups 16 from rods 8, 10 (not shown) at the upper part of the lantern. These rods together with a further tie rod 9 at the lower part are screwed into the casting 19 and provided at the opposite end with clips 11 fitting over the ends of the body. The body is closed at this end by a cover 17 with a sealing gasket 18. One of the rods may be hollow to allow passage of the electric leads to the lamp. The casting 19 has threaded holes (not shown) for the passage of screws which engage the upper end of the support column when this is fitted in the casting. A removable cover 23 is provided to close the end of the lantern and enclose the casting 19. Refractor plates may be mounted on the sides of the lantern body. In a modification, the lantern body is so shaped as to dispense with the need for a separate cover 17 and encloses a tray carrying a lamp starter switch and, on the underside, a pair of lampholders for a sodium lamp. |
