FIELD: protein engineering, biochemistry. SUBSTANCE: amino acid residues of enzyme contacting with substrate into the binding channel are identified and then replaced for another residues that have the same charge indices and similar size of by-side chain. The replacement in acyl-ACP desaturase at positions 114, 115, 117, 118, 179, 181, 188 and 189 results to the alteration of the chain length and specificity in arrangement of double bonds in enzyme that changes its activity.
