CONDUCTIVE HYDROGEL FOR SOLID POLYMER ELECTROLYTE MEMBRANE FUEL CELL

PURPOSE: A conductive hydrogel for a solid polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell and a solid polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell containing the hydrogel are provided, to reduce the electrical contact resistance between a solid polymer electrolyte membrane and a separator and to release the pressure given to an electrolyte membrane during assembly. CONSTITUTION: The conductive hydrogel comprises a gel consisting of an organic polymer and water; and a conductive powder dispersed in the gel. The hydrogel is prepared by mixing an organic polymer and water to make a hydrophilic gel; dispersing a conductive powder in the gel; and repeating freeze drying and freeze thawing at least two times. Preferably the organic polymer is poly(vinyl alcohol), polyacrylate, a copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) and polyacrylate, polysulfonate or starch graft; and the conductive powder is a conductive carbon powder, a graphite powder or a metal powder. Preferably the organic polymer is a poly(vinyl alcohol) having a molecular weight of 10,000 or more and a degree of hydrolysis of 98.0 mol% or more.
