The method involves classifying coefficients according to their amplitude and performing an estimation of the coefficients by a vector of code selected in a predetermined dictionary. A number of coefficients that are to be coded according to a criterion of coding are estimated using the vector. Another approximation of the coefficients taken on an estimated number and in order of classification is performed by another vector of code selected from the predetermined code. An Independent claim is also included for a processor of a digital image for coding of samples for a whole set of data representing physical sizes.
