The engagement mechanism for an idler gear (12) mounted on a shaft with a fixed hub (14) designed to receive a sliding gear (16) and rotate it by means of splines, and incorporating a tapered synchronising ring (24) between the hub and idler gear, has an inclined surface (38) on the sliding gear that interacts with a radial position setter (36) on the hub to assist the sliding gear's movement and prevent it from becoming unsynchronised before it reaches the engaged position. The inclined surface is in the form of a truncated cone that tapers towards the idler gear, and the radial position setter comprises at least three rollers (40) round the hub, held outwards by horseshoe springs (46).
