The reader has an insertion passage to accept a card, where the passage includes a stopper unit (6) with which the card end comes in contact when it is inserted in a main body. A breakage detector detects the breakage in the stopper unit. An error processor coupled to the detector executes an error process when the breakage of the stopper unit is detected by the detector.
