The electromagnetic actuator has a single coil (6) wound on a tubular member (12) made of insulating material. There are permanent magnets (8) at one end of the coil, surrounding the end of the tubular member. The two armatures (2,4) move in opposite directions and have fastening rods (16) on their outer ends. Return springs (20), attached to the outer casing (10) of the actuator, act on collars (18) to push the armatures away from each other. The outer casing acts as a magnetic yoke, and the permanent magnets set up a magnetic field which draws the armatures together. The coil may set up a field in the other direction which pushes the armatures apart.
