1,172,758. Purifying tertiary butanol. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. 5 Sept., 1967 [26 Oct., 1966], No. 40608/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Tertiary butanol obtained by oxidizing isobutane is purified from butyl peroxides and hydroperoxides by heating to 375-475‹ F. for at least one minute. The process may be effected in the vapour phase, or in the liquid phase under pressure, preferably by heating to 400-450‹ F. for 1-10 minutes, the impurities being decomposed to products having no effect on octane rating. The tertiary butanol is produced by molecular oxygen oxidation of isobutane in the liquid phase, which provides a mixture of the butanol with tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, di-tert-butyl peroxide and allyl tert butyl peroxide. Before purification, this mixture may be used to epoxidize propylene to propylene oxide which is recovered by distillation, the residue then being purified as stated.
