A retractable optical unit capable of moving an optical system between an application position and a housed position, and an imaging device provided with the optical unit. Especially, an optical unit and an imaging device capable of obtaining the position information of a lens by detecting the position of a lens barrel supported movably with respect to a fixed barrel. The retractable optical unit comprises a 2-group lens frame movable along the optical axis with respect to a fixed ring and a rear barrel, and a solid state imaging element provided behind the 2-group lens frame, wherein a position detecting means for detecting the position of the 2-group lens frame is provided to the movable 2-group lens frame. The optical unit can be downsized by eliminating any protrusion or the like on the outer shape part, and can minimizes increases in the number of components and working man-hours.
