The assembly to monitor the folding and stitching actions at a sewing station (1) has an electronic camera (13) to take separate pictures of the fabric workpiece (N) at the folding station (6) and the sewing machine (3). A computer (14) is linked to the control unit (15). A VDU (16) is in the field of view of the operative to give a display of the folded and stitched fabric workpiece at least while the next workpiece is being folded and stitched. The image data are stored in memory (17) as a durable archive. The computer can be linked to a reference image memory, for the camera images to be compared with nominal images, and the machine stopped or a warning sounded if there is a deviation.
