A light emitting device comprises a substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface; a region (26) of first conductivity type overlying the first surface of the substrate; an active region (28) overlying the region of first conductivity type; a region (32) of second conductivity type overlying the active region; a reflective material overlying a portion of the second surface of the substrate, and surrounding an aperture through which light exits the device.
