The valve assembly (10) has a throttling member connected to a valve cover (18) and extending into a throughbore of a piston (22) to insure gradual alteration of the cross-sectional area of the orifice of the throughbore upon reciprocation of the piston. The piston is reciprocably mounted in a valve body (12). A partition wall separates the valve body into two flow passages (28,30). - A modulating plug selectively permits fluid flow between the flow passages. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a method of gradually opening a modulating plug of a valve assembly.
